The 8 traits managers need to be successful

Recently Google undertook some research to find out what makes a great managers. They identified 8 cornerstone traits that managers need to have to be successful. These are:

  1. Have a vision
  2. Be a good communicator
  3. Be productive and results oriented
  4. Be a good coach
  5. Empower the team and do not micromanage
  6. Use your technical skills to advise
  7. Express concern for team members’ well being
  8. Help with career development

There are many things to underlie these 8 traits – things like the ability to build trust, be transparent, lead by example, celebrate success and listen actively.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being extremely poor and 10 being excellent) rate yourself and your company’s managers on these eight traits.
