Recently Google undertook some research to find out what makes a great managers. They identified 8 cornerstone traits that managers need to have to be successful. These are:
- Have a vision
- Be a good communicator
- Be productive and results oriented
- Be a good coach
- Empower the team and do not micromanage
- Use your technical skills to advise
- Express concern for team members’ well being
- Help with career development
There are many things to underlie these 8 traits – things like the ability to build trust, be transparent, lead by example, celebrate success and listen actively.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being extremely poor and 10 being excellent) rate yourself and your company’s managers on these eight traits.
